The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne: A Review
The Shadow of the Gods is the first book in The Bloodsworn series by John Gwynne, and overall, I really enjoyed this captivating fantasy read. If you’re looking for a thrilling tale featuring fallen gods, their descendants, and Vikings, then this book is definitely for you!
The story revolves around three main characters, each on their own unique journey:
- Orka: A huntress on a dangerous quest for vengeance.
- Elvar: A noblewoman who has turned her back on privilege in pursuit of battle fame.
- Varg: A thrall (slave) seeking revenge among the renowned mercenaries known as the Bloodsworn.
Each chapter alternates between these characters, eventually revealing how their paths intertwine as the story progresses.
I particularly loved Orka; she is a fierce fighter who stops at nothing to reclaim what is hers. Her chapters hinted at deeper layers to her character, suggesting she will play a crucial role in the unfolding plot.
Varg was probably my second favorite character. I found all the members of the Bloodsworn to be entertaining—a tight-knit, humorous group with their own secrets. I especially enjoyed Varg’s chapters as they offered a fascinating glimpse into how the Bloodsworn operates.
On the other hand, Elvar’s chapters were my least favorite. I found them a bit dull, lacking the action and excitement that engaged me in the other characters’ stories. It wasn’t until about 75% into the book that things started to pick up for her group.
Overall, this was a great read, perfect for anyone who loves tales of Vikings and fantasy adventure. I started reading this during a busy time in my life, which made it take longer to finish than usual. I also paused to read Onyx Storm before it got spoiled. Because of the slower pace at the beginning, I’d rate this book 4 stars. Although the story took its time to develop, I truly enjoyed the setting and the characters. With its Norse-inspired world, I found it fun to immerse myself in the narrative.
Once I wrapped up Onyx Storm and returned to The Shadow of the Gods, I was quickly pulled back into the story. The intensity ramped up toward the end, and I found myself staying up late to discover how it all concluded.
I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series once I make my way through the rest of my TBR!
